Narrative Based Music Video

A narrative based music video is a video consisting mainly of a story line relating to the content of the lyrics and genre of the song. This is good technique for engaging your target audience.

This type of video is often used for songs which feature in films, with scenes from the film cut into the video. An example of this is: Charli xcx – Boom Clap. Where we see clips from the extremely popular film ‘The Fault in Our Stars’.  Also the actual music video is filmed in Amsterdam on the riverside, which is the same location where the film is made.

Performance Based Video

A performance music video is where the band or artist is performing either to the camera or to an audience. This is a popular technique used by rock bands as their concerts are usually high energy and there is more interest for a viewer to watch the band perform as a whole rather than just featuring an artist on their own. The energy created from the crowd in the video give it an exciting effect and feel to the video. Also the camera angles in this type of video are usually very fast paced in terns of editing and include a lot of close ups on the band members making it a lot more interesting to watch.

A performance-based video is good for having a low budget.

An example of a band that has done this is Green Day – American Idiot.

Concept Based Music Video

This style of music video is where it is based around a concept or idea. Most often these are seen as unique or tend to utilize a particular filming or editing technique.  This type of music video often has very little or no relevant link between the lyrics, mood or genre of the song.

However conceptual videos are not very popular since they are not greatly accessible, they do not fir the commercial demands of the world.

An example of a artist that has used a concept based music video is: Florence and the Machine – Dog Days. This is because the performance given within the video does not relate to the content of the lyrics, or tell a story of any kind. This video used abstract ideas to create a visual form of the song. Although Florence is performing in the song it does give it an element of performance based video however primarily it is much more concept based.
