An example of an artist that is in the dance pop genre is Katy Perry. Here is the front and back cover of her album ‘Teenage Dream’. In my opinion I believe her album represents her genre of ‘dance pop’ very well as the colours of bright pinks and flirtatious reds used on both covers are very vivid and vibrant which is what I would associate with the genre. The text in which her name is wrote in is very funky looking and big and easy to spot, the bubble writing in red outlined with a fresh blue colour is great as they both contrast each other well and help compliment the title to stand out . The fact that her name is very eye-catching will intice people to go and buy her album as Katy Perry is a very recognised household name.

On the front cover we see a photo of Katy herself lying in a light pink candy floss cloud completely naked with only small strip of cloud hiding her modesty. This links in with Laura Mulveys theory of the ‘male gaze’ as people (mainly of the male gender) will be interested in this as Katy is a very attractive young women and looks very appealing to look at on this cover.

Digipak Analysis of Other Artists

Katy Perry

On the back of Katy’s teenage dream cover we can see a track list of all the songs featured on her album. The text of this is written in bright, bold red capital letters so they are easy to read. A great effect that the text has is that every time the letter ‘O’ is used in the track list it is replaced by a strawberry swirl lollypop sweet, this links in with her sweet theme for the album as on the album we see she has replaced the clouds for candy floss and also on the front cover of the album the text ‘Teenage Dream’ is also written in this sweet style format.

Nicki Minaj

BACK

FRONT

Another example of a dance pop artist is Nicki Minaj. Here is the front and back cover of her album ‘Pink Friday Roman Reloaded’. In my opinion I believe her album represents her style of genre well as for example the colours she has used on both of her covers are extremely creative and outrageously bright, which I feel link in with the dance pop genre well.

As we can see on the wall behind Nicki the colours look very messy and just splashed all over everywhere, however it does look effective as all the colours link in well with each other. This is something I feel I would like to incorporate into my final digipack idea as I feel all these bright and vibrant colours used in this creative way fit very well with the dance pop genre. One aspect however that I do not like about this album cover is the text used to present her name and album name. This is because the font used for the writing is different for most of the words and is therefore hard to read; also I feel a darker colour should have been used in order to make the text contrast the background more in order for it to stand out.

Also another factor of this album which I do not like is the fact that Nicki uses the same image for the front and for the back of her album. This is something I do not want on my final digipak idea as I would like the front and back of the album to be different to each other as I feel it is more interesting and appealing to the target audience this way.
